Kanaloa Under Threat
Kanaloa and the kai palaoa have come under threat. Issues concerning the holistic heath of the kai palaoa and the safety of cetacean life have become more and more apparent within Hawaiian communities and among practitioner groups. Climate change, and changing ocean water temperatures, threatens to disrupt the seasonal migrations of Kanaloa into arctic waters by sending the zooplankton and nutrient regularities into disarray. Ongoing seabed mining and military training operations, such as RIMPAC, that employ SONAR or seismic instruments are believed to inundate and confuse Kanaloa. An air of distrust exist between citizens and the US Navy, regard claims that these underwater mechanisms do not harm or disorient sea life to the point of disorientation and death. Subsequent to strandings and beachings, or deaths, cultural practitioners often criticize NOAA and other state or federal regulatory institutions for the mismanagement of beaching events and post-martem procedures.
